Bye bye Ceylon

We have now reached the end of our Sri Lankan adventure, and after my (Anna’s) last post in Ella (where unfortunately Alma and Kiara suffered from food poisoning for 4 days) we continued to the cultural capital Kandy. A Buddha visit was about all the weak little legs could bear, so we skipped the famous tooth temple.

Next stop was the kitesurfing capital Kalpitiya where we had a rough start with a broken tooth in a water slide. 8 hours of tuktuk and trying to find a doctor/ dentist where the clinic didn’t look like Scotland’s worst toilet. Luckily we had great coaching by 82 year old grandmother dentist, and with a very clear plan about what needed to be done we finally found a good dentist who also could carry out the plan.

When we eventually recovered from this little incident, we could actually enjoy Kalpitiya with snorkling, long beach walks and a lovely little cafe where we basically moved in for two days.

We end our trip in the hustle of Colombo with shopping, food courts, water park and nail jobs. The runs along the beach at dusk feeling like Pamela Anderson (without the boobs) gave a feeling I’ll try to keep with me when we are back in the dark and cold.

Final Lion

What I have appreciated most with Sri Lanka is hands down the lovely people. So genuinely kind and warm hearted. The mountains of fresh fruit will also be very missed - a little less so the street dogs and the amount of trash. With a non existent recycling and trash collection system this is a massive challenge that leaves some bad taste, but there is hope in the new government. Let’s just hope that the new generation has a different focus!
