Colonial Cartagena

Our next stop was in Cartagena, where we had a home exchange with big pool to the girls delight.

Cartagena city is really beautiful - also rather touristy - like a mixture of Fort Galle in Sri Lanka, Hoi An in Vietnam and Visby in Sweden. Well, they are all unescolisted for a reason.

In a park in the center we also saw the coolest fauna since the walking sticks in Guatape - a sloth, iguana, and tiny monkeys (no clue about what kind).

Half a day was spent at a hair dresser/ nail salon, and the nails almost survived an evening of 3x3 street basket with some locals.

At last but not the least we had a day trip to the Rosario islands, about 45 min by boat to island hopping between different beach clubs, snorkling and turning into Danish flags skin color wise.

Now we are sitting in the bus for 5 h heading North to Santa Marta, where we are swopping homes with Carlos who enjoyed ÅbergatjĂ€rn this summer!

Feliz navidad!

Our 3rd stop and home exchange in Colombia was white domes glamping, a really cool place about 2 h drive from Medellin. About half the road was pretty hardcore to say the least, but we managed to get there with both rental car and passengers intact.

The main attractions in the area (approx. 1 h drive) were La piedra del Peñol (a massive rock which you could climb on some 700 steps) - front page photo of our bible (Lonely Planet) and Guatape, one of Colombia’s most colorful towns, famous for it’s zocalos (3D murals).

At home we enjoyed kayaking in the massive reservoir, chilling in the jacuzzi and eating all candy we had stocked up with in the closest supermarket some 45 min away.

Magic MedellĂn

In Medellin the younger family members liked our home and swimming pool so much that they refused to join a walking tour to the famous comuna 13 - once the most dangerous area in Latin America with 6-8 murders/day, but today filled with tourists admiring the graffiti and break dance. It was really interesting to hear about the journey the area has gone through, and wonder what we could learn from that in Sweden.

More art was admired downtown, with Botero’s overweight sculptures. Another example of MedellĂn’s rough history was the left bird - which was damaged in a terrorist attack at a concert where 23 people were killed 1995. Botero then made a new, with the condition that it should be placed next to the damaged original, as a memory of those who were killed.

Downtown MedellĂn was crowded and overwhelming, and even if it was also quite a large amount of drug addicts it never felt threatening.

One high light in this city with 4.5 M people was spending an afternoon with two of Alma’s CISV friends from the camp this summer.

Another was joining the evening party of Christmas lights and street food where the favourite was doriloco - a nachos plate to go in a Doritos bag.

Junia is sometimes ordering in Spanish - she does it really well - but usually I do the talking. Justus has occasionally tried the ”surprise me” strategy - with less successful results.

We all had a feeling that we easily could’ve spent more days in Medellin - but there are still so many places to discover in this wonderful country… we just need to come back.

Colombia!

Tuesday evening we left the greyness in Stockholm for Bogota - a smooth trip despite the little detail of a foggy and closed airport, so we needed to continue to Cali instead. Hijacked by the mist. About 5 h later than planned we eventually landed in Bogota, slightly jetlagged, but ready to hit the city. Food court, Christmas market, and playing how-many-people-can-you-squeeze-in-a-small-uber.

We spent 3 days in the capital, went on a cycling tour (amazing amount of bike lanes), climbed Monserrate (500 m elevation up to 3100 m - a lot of heavy breathing and Latino music from portable loudspeakers) and admired amazing graffiti. The biggest highlight however was to spend an afternoon with Alma’s host family from this summer - after all, it is the people that leaves the biggest impression. And  all Colombians we’ve met are just lovely.

Today we left the capital for Medellin, warmer weather and a swimming pool to the ladies delight. And a bbq in our home so Justus could fulfill his asador dreams.
